Jokowi Gives JK Greater Role Ahead of 2019 Election

The president has given his vice president a bigger role in policy making as part of his efforts to consolidate forces ahead of the 2019 presidential election.

Eighteen months ahead of the 2019 presidential election, the relationship between President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and Vice President Jusuf “JK” Kalla has entered a new phase. Kalla has been given a bigger role in deciding government policies, from poverty alleviation and bureaucratic reforms to the latest investment issues. This is seen as part of the president’s efforts to consolidate forces for 2019.

On Tuesday (6/2), President Joko visited the Office of the Vice President in Jakarta for the first time since becoming president in 2014, even though the vice president’s office is located next to the State Palace on Jalan Medan Merdeka Utara, Jakarta, with the two separated only by a low iron fence.
