Trade Balance in Deficit, Food Imports Burdening Economy

Imports of consumer goods, especially foodstuffs, continue to rise, and high food imports in April led to a huge deficit in Indonesia’s trade balance.

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) noted the trade balance deficit in April 2018 hit US$ 1.63 billion, the largest deficit since April 2014 at US$ 1.97 billion. The import value at that time reached US$ 16.25 billion. In April 2018, the import value was US$ 16.09 billion, rising 11.28 percent compared to March 2018, and 34.68 percent year-on-year.
