Although his name has long been circulating, the selection of Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Chairman Ma'ruf Amin as the vice presidential candidate of President Joko Widodo for the 2019 Presidential Election (Pilpres) has surprised many. Likewise, the move by Gerindra Party Chairman Prabowo Subianto to take Jakarta Deputy Governor Sandiaga Uno as his running mate. Their decisions appear based on electoral factors and to maintain their respective party coalitions.
President Joko announced Ma’ruf’s name during a press conference after holding a meeting with the general chairmen and secretary general of nine political parties supporting him at Plataran Restaurant, Menteng, Jakarta, on Thursday (9/8) afternoon. “I have decided and have received approval from the coalition parties that Professor KH Ma’ruf Amin will accompany me as vice presidential candidate,” he said.
